TAYLOR PARKS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL: Thinking about 100 days of school ...

Taylor Parks Elementary School celebrated the “100th Day of School - A Celebration” recently.

The students in Mrs. Abramas' class enjoyed celebrating the day of school with sweet treats and learning.  All the students, wearing awesome 100th day glasses they made for themselves, worked hard on various activities including reading and writing.

The math portion included counting out 100 different food items that became a delicious snack.

TAYLOR PARKS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL: Students of the month

The “Student of the Month” program is a honor that happens each month at Taylor Parks Elementary School. Teachers select one student from their classes that who always demonstrates their personal best.

This includes using the life skills of caring, responsibility, integrity, flexibility, perseverance, humor, problem solving, friendship and common sense. Teachers also take into consideration attendance, behavior and a ready-to-learn outlook.

Once the student is chosen for that month, a tribute is posted in the hallway that highlights the students. Before the month’s end, a reception is held with parents or other special people in attendance. Food and drinks are available for all to enjoy.

Principal Ms. Downie recognizes each student  and the moment is captured in a photo for a gift to the student and family.  It is truly an honor for a student to be named a Student of the Month.

TAYLOR PARKS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL: Getting the 'bang' for its buck!

Well, the books have arrived and the students are "up to their necks" in wonderful and informative books.  “First Book” allows deep discounts on books.

That enables the school to “get the biggest bang for its buck,” as Taylor Parks Librarian Mrs. Lind likes to say.

The books are on display in the library before hitting the shelves for check out.

Thank you Target and “First Book” for the gift of reading.

HOOVER MIDDLE SCHOOL: Quilts catch the principal's eye!

Principal Michelle Tocco of Hoover Middle School relayed some pictures of Mrs Straske's eight-graders and their “Symbols of me” quilts that they made in ELA class.

Each child brought in symbols of things that represented themselves and created an 8 x 10 piece.  They then connected all of the class’s pieces together to make a class quilt, with representation of each member of the class.

They certainly got the principal’s eye!

TRUMAN HIGH SCHOOL: Prom Fashion Show a big hit!

By Carly Lundgren-Barnard

The Truman High School marketing students’ Prom Fashion Show was a huge success.

Men’s Wearhouse dressed the male models. David’s Bridal and Yazee’s Boutique handled the female attire.

They will receive their own business cards with their own personal ID number on them to pass out to students (and they do not have to be Truman students; they can be anyone needing to rent a tux).

If those students go into Men's Wearhouse for their prom tuxedo they will get $40 off their tux; the DECA marketing club will get a $5 donation for each person who comes in with a card; and the DECA member will receive benefits.

GO INTO MEN’S WEARHOUSE TODAY FOR A CHANCE TO WIN $25,000, A FREE TUX FOR PROM AND FREE $500 SUIT. YOU ONLY NEED FIVE REFERRALS FOR A FREE TUX, 10 REFERRALS FOR A FREE SUIT AND THE PERSON WHO GETS THE MOST REFERRALS WILL WIN $25,000. SECOND PLACE IS $15,000 AND THIRD PLACE IS $10,000.

March 14-16 will be our DECA club's state competition at the Detroit Marriott. Truman will be taking 37 students to compete for a chance at nationals and scholarship money.

We are very proud of these students and know that they will represent Truman very professionally at the conference. They will compete in the areas of marketing by taking a 100-question exam and participating in two role-plays.

At McDowell Elementary School, you can call it “Physics with Mrs. Wensorski.”

Here's what she needed to make the world's best Hovercraft experience:
  • One piece of plywood with a circle cut out of it for a leaf blower to insert into
  • Add plastic sheeting to make a cushion
  • Attach an extension cord
  • Then invite all the fifth graders.

Everyone had a blast seeing how this simple experiment works!

HOLLAND ELEMENTARY SCHOOL: What do you mean, you won't take it back?

Holland Elementary School pupils are persuasive writers.

If you purchased a new game for your X-Box or Wii and discovered it was broken and the store would not replace it or give you your money back because it was on sale, how would you get the company who manufactured the game to replace it for you?

This was the school-wide writing topic for our monthly assembly and our children were very persuasive in writing letters to convince the companies to replace the games!

Students were very sincere, courteous and offered great explanations of the situation. Many of them mentioned that they were just young children who had been saving money for the game for a long time and were so sad that the game did not work.

This was a great lesson in the appropriate way to get good results! Everyone in the audience, including parents and other adult guests, agreed that if they were the manufacturer, they would refund the money or give them a new game because the pupils at Holland were so convincing!

HOLLAND ELEMENTARY SCHOOL: It's 100 days and counting!

The 100th day of school at Holland Elementary School is always an exciting day for kindergarten and first-grade students. It is a day to celebrate all of the great ways children "get" to 100 by counting!

All year the students have been practicing counting by ones, twos, fives and tens to get to 100 and on the 100th day of school, they get to put all of that counting into practice.

Every student brought in a collection of 100 items. Throughout the day they read books about the 100th day of school, counting their items and grouping them in different ways – making 100-day crowns, thinking about and drawing what they will look like when they are 100 years old and enjoying other fun activities with their friends in class.

Check out what a creature with 100 eyes would look like and some other interesting collections.
