TAYLOR HIGH SCHOOL Students Earn Recognition at State Career Development DECA Conference

Thirty-seven DECA students from Taylor High School traveled to the state competition after qualifying during district competition in December. Over 19,000 students competed for international awards and scholarships as emerging leaders and entrepreneurs.

The students represented Taylor in a positive and professional way. They worked hard preparing in the weeks leading up to the competition on written events and “role plays.”

“I am so proud of how hard they worked on all of their projects,” THS DECA supervisor Carly Lundgren-Barnard said.

The 2019 conference was held in Detroit on March 8-10, and it was one of the most exciting, competitive and fun Michigan DECA events of the year.

Taylor had the opportunity to meet and compete with over 4,000 Michigan DECA members from throughout the state and also meet important and influential business professionals.  The SCDC was a time to develop occupational and leadership skills as well as meet other fun and energetic Michigan DECA members. The organization also received its new charter for Taylor High School.

During the school year, approximately 180,000 of DECA’s 300,000 student members take part in the organization’s competitive events program, allowing them to compete for local and regional titles.

The competitions are designed to simulate real-life business scenarios and test students’ academic understanding and skills development. The top state and provincial winners put their talents to the test during the program’s final round of competition in Atlanta. The DECA International Career Development Conference was the pinnacle of competition where nearly 19,000 students vied for international honors.

In addition to career-based competition, DECA members engaged in leadership academies and networking opportunities with over 60 internationally recognized businesses.

DECA prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality and management. DECA enhances the preparation for college and careers by providing co-curricular programs that integrate into classroom instruction, apply learning, connect to business and promote competition.

WEST MIDDLE SCHOOL gets a visit from archaeologist

On March 12-13, Ms. Sarah Mullersmen, archaeologist from the Kelsey Museum in Ann Arbor, visited with all seventh grade students at West Middle School. Ms. Mullersmen shared burial boxes and pottery pieces with the students.

From the burial box items students needed to make inferences about the deceased person. Students discussed the possible age, gender, career and social status of the deceased. It was great to hear the lively conversations that went on among students.

As a second activity, students were to reconstruct the pottery pieces into original shape and size. Then they made educated guesses as to what pottery was used for.

Students were engaged as they became familiar with the jobs and responsibilities of an archaeologist. West appreciates Ms. Mullersmen‘s visit and information she presented. From now on seventh-grade social studies students will be able to visit a museum with a new perspective.

Artifacts will not be just objects of interest, but the artifacts will be able to tell a story based on what we learned from Ms. Mullersmen.

TAYLOR PARKS ELEMENTARY shows off Bloxels during special event

At the Taylor Schools Extravaganza, Taylor Parks Elementary School students from the fifth-grade classes of Mrs. Dwornick and Mrs. McLaughlin showcased the game Bloxels.

It’s a “hands-on  brains-on” game where students can turn their own stories into an action video game. It requires students to use creativity, imagination, problem solving, collaboration and much more.

Bloxels boards are used to design and build characters and story backgrounds, which they then put into a video format.  Pupils actually ran the booth, showed off their creations and taught others how to create their own.

WEST MIDDLE SCHOOL classes go to planetarium

Mrs. Smith’s and Mrs. Eccleton‘s West Middle School classes recently visited the Wayne State University planetarium. The students were treated to a program on the planets and stars.

This activity was an extension of the science curriculum objectives. Students were engaged to learn additional information on this subject. After, the students celebrated the successful field trip by having lunch at Pizza Papalis in Taylor.
