TAYLOR HIGH SCHOOL DECA highly successful at EMU

(See all the awardees at the bottom of this thread, under the photos.)

The Taylor High School DECA chapter had 47 students compete at the district competition at Eastern Michigan University on Friday Jan. 11 and Marketing Department Head Carly Lundgren Barnard could not be prouder of them.

Students compete in different categories and have the opportunity to win medals for top test score, top role-play score and overall state finalist (top score combining test and role play).

Taylor DECA won 25 medals with 14 students advancing to state competition with role-plays, and 21 students advancing to state competition with written event presentation projects. A total of 35 students will be representing Taylor at the DECA State Career Development Conference in March 2019.

Taylor DECA also had three internationally qualifying marketing campaigns. DECA is now selling Little Caesars Pizza kits to help cover the costs of state competition, so see a DECA member if interested in ordering.

DECA wants to thank Mary Rita Zalewski, Shayna Hale, Ashley Mckenzie, Stephen Weatherholt, alumni Amario Massey, alumni Dominick Brock, Chelsea Fell from Advantage One Credit Union and Jennifer Lundgren from Quicken Loans for coming as chaperones and/or judges.

Also, they want to thank the administration, board office, transportation and our staff for all their support. Without them the club could never have done as well as it did.

MINI COWS, NAMING CONTEST makes debut at Petting Farm

Everyone can name a “famous twosome” or iconic couple. From Adam and Eve to Abbott and Costello, we’ve had our share. But now you get an opportunity to name the next iconic couple, two miniature cows, a girl and boy, Taylor-style.

The Heritage Park Petting Farm will begin accepting nominations for during our “Name the Baby Cows!” contest on Sunday, January 13, when the whole campaign starts with a special introductory showing at the farm. Nominations will be accepted through January 31, and the City will announce the winning names in February.

Nominations must be submitted in person at Petting Farm, located on the corner of Northline Road and Pardee. Every nomination turned in will receive a complimentary pass for “Celebrate Spring,” in April, one of the facility’s marquee events. Nominations are limited to one suggestion per person.

The winner will be announced in early February and will receive an annual Family Pass to the Petting Farm, good for admission to farm for a full year and includes all special events. The winners name will also be displayed in barn, along the new names of the cows.

The entire campaign will kick off with the “Mini Baby Cows” debut from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, January 13. Admission will $3 across the board. At that time, you’ll be able to check out the new baby mini cows in the barn and turn in your nomination form. In the Petting Farm’s classroom, there will be complimentary crafts and children activities. If you miss that debut, you can drop off your nomination through the end of the month at the Petting Farm during regular business hours.

“While many of the farms’ residents are rescue animals, the mini cows give the farm a unique opportunity to offer the thousands of elementary school children that visit the farm each year,” said Melanie Shihadeh, manager of the facility. “These children from the City of Taylor and surrounding cities in southeast Michigan a chance to actually be able to walk up, touch, and interact with cows during their visit.”

Miniature cattle are the perfect animal for small acreage farms. According to experts in the field, they require one-third the feed of standard size animals. Because of their small size, miniature cattle can be handled easily and efficiently without the need for special equipment or special fencing.  They are perfect for … the Heritage Park Petting Farm.

“Heritage Park Petting Farm is a unique urban farm,” Shihadeh said. “Many children that visit from all of southeast Michigan have little or no exposure to farm animals. These mini cows are the perfect size for children that are experiencing these animals for the first time.”
