The
Taylor Northwest Little League is celebrating 60 years this season, and this
year's opening day celebration honored the late Edward Boike Jr. As has been
the practice in the past, the Hoover Hawks Band marched in the parade and took
the field before anyone.
The
new scoreboard in left-center field is named in honor of Mr. Boike, who served
in several capacities with the City and Wayne County and was always a huge
supporter of youth sports. In fact, as his wife, Joyce, pointed out during the
ceremony, her husband used to watch the games from the very spot where the
scoreboard now stands.
A
huge crowd was on hand for opening day, which started with a parade down Wick
Road to Papp Park. Master of Ceremonies Doug Geiss pointed out the various
improvements in the park, from drainage to the scoreboard, improved lighting
and even the new dugouts that every field now possesses.
A
large number of City, county and state officials were on hand. State. Rep.
Erika Geiss presented the league with new state and federal flags.
The
Boike Family handled the ceremonial first pitch. City Council Pro Tem Tim
Woolley, a longtime member of TNWLL, spoke to the crowd briefly in place of
Mayor Rick Sollars.
Now
it's time to play ball!
