BLAIR MOODY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL: Students learn about Great Lakes water system

Blair Moody Elementary School students from Mr. Dwyer and Mrs. McLaughlin’s class participated in the Great Lakes Education Program.

They cruised down the Detroit River aboard a 40-foot science vessel.  During the 2 1/2 hour cruise they learned marine knot tying, all about plankton, navigation, ship terminology, all about dissolved oxygen and carbon dioxide, explored the bottom of the river with an underwater camera, tested the water clarity, measured the pH level of the river, and found how to measure the wind and temperature on the river.

During the second half of the field trip, the students learned about wildlife in the marsh at Lake Erie Metro Park.  They also used water syringes to capture small insects in marsh water and view them with microscopes. They were thrilled and excited while viewing the creatures up close and personal.
