MYERS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL: Teacher's daughter is perfect example of 'giving season'

This is the giving season, and some just give more than others...

Kaelyn Burnett, a 13-year-old eighth-grade student from Dearborn, wanted to do something for others this holiday season.

Knowing of the needs of the Myers Elementary School pupils because her mother, Leslie, has been the music teacher at Myers for 16 years, Kaelyn decided to give back.

She began her quest in August, collecting bottles and cans and shoe boxes. She even saved her allowance to purchase items to fill the 40 shoe boxes for the children at Myers.  These boxes were full to the brim with items from toothpaste to tissues and ornaments to toys.

On December 16, Kaelyn visited Myers and delivered the shoe boxes herself to children from kindergarten to the fifth grade. Pupils were very excited when they finally opened their shoe box.

One student was overheard saying, "I got a new bar of soap!" while another was overwhelmed with the idea of a new comb!

"The feeling you know you helped someone, that's the best part," Kaelyn said.

Through Kaelyn's tears of kindness, she said, "I want to do this again next year, but bigger."
