WEST MIDDLE SCHOOL students learn about plastics

On June 1-2, Ms. Egan from Plastivan came to West Middle School to raise awareness of the importance of plastics in our world. Ms. Egan explained that plastics are used in packaging, automobiles, medicine and entertainment.

Ms. Egan discussed the many diverse careers that involve plastics.  She directed the students to the various universities and community colleges that allow you to specialize in the various careers.

The students now have a better understanding that plastics are made of polymers that originally came from oil. Plastics can be made to have many different physical and chemical characteristics, but all are moldable.

Through hands-on activities that involved physical and chemical changes, the students enjoyed learning about plastics and the career opportunities that are available to them. Ms. Egan's visit, sponsored by the Plastic Engineers Association was informative and well-received by staff and students.
