RELAY FOR LIFE KICKS OFF SATURDAY MORNING: Middle school bands perform

Despite some questionable weather and some soggy grounds that just won't go away, the 2014 Relay for Life started this morning with thousands of proud people gathering at Heritage Park around Coan Lake for the annual walk-a-thon.

Mayor Rick Sollars and many others addressed the crowd before the event kicked off.

Bands from both Hoover and West middle schools were on hand, as were the JROTC. The West Middle School Jazz Band was also on hand.

Sponsors included Fox 2, Applewood Nursing, Harvard Drug, Meijer, Purolator International, Taylor Town, The WHSE, LLC, EEI Global, Senate Coney Island, Title Brothers Construction, the Democratic Club of Taylor, Advantage One FCU, McCaffery's, Sonne Family Dental, and the Grosse Ile Academy.

The Relay will take place all day and night and finish up with a ceremony Sunday morning about 10.

The Luminaria event is scheduled for tonight around Coan Lake. Luminaria bags are still being sold around the lake at various locations for a $10 donation.

Still on tap today is Miss Downriver just after 3 p.m.; Zumba (starts on the stage and then goes around the track) at about 4:30; In Arm's Reach Band (5:30); the Fight Back Ceremony (6:30); and the Export at 7:30.

Tonight, it'll be the Luminaria Ceremony at 9 p.m., Glow Zumba at 10 p.m. and "Clash Wrestling" at 11 p.m.

Karaoke and a DJ will continue to play thoughout the night hours.
