KENNEDY HIGH SCHOOL 'voters' get support from City Clerk

On Thursday, May 19, Kennedy High School students from the Class of 2017, in conjunction with Clerk Cindy Bower of the City of Taylor, were able to vote for senior class and student body officers with real ballots and tabulator.

Students were able to learn the process of voting and were able to register to vote for the upcoming presidential election.  Clerk Bower and Deputy Clerk Sara El-Rafaai worked with Kennedy Student Government advisers Courtney Osborne and Michele Marshall to set up the event.

Other city representatives on hand were City Councilman Alex Garza and Treasurer Ed Bourassa.

“We had a great morning at Kennedy today, as 90 students from the Class of 2017 took part of voting for their Student Government leaders,” Clerk Bower said. “Everything went very smooth. Thank you to Alex and Ed for coming out to assist.  A big ‘thank you’ to Sara for orchestrating all of the details with the staff at Kennedy.

“My goal is to offer this at both high schools next year and to maybe include the other classes.”

The clerk’s office also did a voter registration drive and registered quite a few 18 or almost-18-year-olds to vote.  The clerk also hosted a voter registration drive with the government classes at Truman.

“It is so important to get our youth involved with voting,” Clerk Bower said. “This was a great way for them to see how the process works on Election Day.”

Pictures include Junior Class President and newly elected Senior Class of 2017 President Kyle Wright were first to vote. Class of 2017 student Faith Meyers gets her "I Voted" sticker from Clerk Bower as Deputy Clerk El-Rifaai looks on.
