One
of the new features of the annual State of the City business luncheon under Mayor
Rick Sollars has been its’ charitable contributions.
Since
restarting the annual event, which is presented by the Rotary Club of Taylor
with the mayor as the featured speaker, well over $10,000 has been raised out
of the events and donated to needy charities in the community.
During
Thursday's Rotary Club meeting at the Wayne County Community College District's
Downriver Campus, Mayor Sollars and the club made donations to ChristNet and
the Taylor Schools Foundation For Educational Excellence. Each organization received
a check for $2,000 to benefit their cause.
Both
Mayor Sollars and the Rotary Club of Taylor have been active donors to charitable
causes in Taylor. When he took office in November 2013, Mayor Sollars made it a
point to restart the state of the city addresses annually, and make sure that the
proceeds when to key organizations across the community. This fit perfectly with
the mission of the Rotary, which makes such donations on a regular basis.
Over
the three years of state-of-the-city presentations, charitable contributions
have also been made to such organizations as the the Penrickton Center for Blind
Children, Taylor Reading Corps, and Downriver Fish & Loaves Food Pantry.
"The
Rotary Club has been a fabulous partner and host in these events," Mayor Sollars
said. "The fact that the proceeds go to important charities in our community
is something that I wanted to establish from the beginning. It's an honor to be
able to raise funds for these groups."
Rotary
President Suzanne Downing and Mayor Sollars presented the 2016 SOC checks to Linda
Dickman of ChristNet and Linda Newsome and Michelle Matney of the Taylor Schools
Foundation.
