Taylor
Golf is launching a new opportunity for the younger generation to get involved
with the game.
The
First Tee Greater Detroit will begin offering programs at the Lakes of Taylor
Golf Course on May 9. First Tree is a life skills/golf skills program for
children ages 5 through 17.
The
First Tee is a youth development organization founded in 1997 to mentor and
develop children through the teaching of golf. It has engaged 17,000 volunteers
to reach 9 million children since its inception. The mission of The First Tee
is “to impact the lives of young people by providing educational programs that
build character, instill life-enhancing values and promote healthy choices
through the game of golf.”
The
core programming uses golf as a mirror of life to teach the Nine Core Values:
honesty, integrity, sportsmanship, respect, confidence, responsibility,
perseverance, courtesy, and judgment. The hallmark of The First Tee is its
nearly 200 chapters, where this programming is administered. However, the
organization has expanded into schools as well to reach even more children and
make a major difference.
There
are currently six The First Tee chapters in Michigan.
The
demographic in the community surrounding its Detroit chapter location is well
suited for The First Tee with at-times large youth populations, high poverty
levels and low high school graduation rates.By introducing the game of golf and
The First Tee Nine Core Values to local children, it hopes to develop their
future and lift the entire community.
