HOLLAND ELEMENTARY SCHOOL: Peer mediation facilitates constructive -- and not destructive -- discussion

Students at Holland Elementary School are learning that peaceful conflict resolution is always the key.

Children at Holland like to solve problems peacefully and on their own. Recently, new Peer Mediators were trained to assist students in grades three, four and five, who may be having minor issues with another peer. The six students learned the procedure to follow to help students come to a resolution to their problems and how to facilitate the discussion between the students.

The students attended an afternoon workshop where they discussed feelings, reading the emotions of others by their body language and how to help others express how they feel.  In order to have Peer Mediation, both parties must be willing to participate and it cannot be a problem that an adult would need to handle.

The school has used this process at Holland for many years and it has proven to be a successful way to help students get along.
