West
Middle School was honored to have Mr. Frank Demare speak to sixth graders
recently.
Mr.
Demare, who goes by the nickname Scooter, was born with a physical condition that
affects his arms and legs. But Scooter has met his physical challenges with
determination to overcome any limitations.
As
he addressed the students, he encouraged them to continue to work hard, never
give up and above all to be grateful for their individuality. Most importantly,
Scooter said we must treat everyone with kindness.
Scooter
told the sixth-grade classes that just as the main character in the book and
movie “Wonder,” Augie wanted acceptance and friends. He said that is what
everyone wants. Scooter encouraged the students to follow their passion.
For
Scooter, it was sports, where he excelled as a top rated tennis player in high
school and college. The students thank Scooter for sharing his life
experiences and hope to gain strength from Scooter’s message, that all things
are possible with hard work and determination.
