In
May five of Hoover Middle School’s seventh-grade girls had an opportunity to
attend the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) workshop
hosted by the American Association of University of Women (AAUW).
The
purpose of this program is to provide middle school girls with interactive
workshops featuring dynamic women scientists, engineers and health care
specialists, and showcase opportunities for women in scientific careers.
The
five students, along with Ms. Hicks, had a fantastic day learning about careers
in these fields. The students were able to choose three workshops that they
were interested attending for the day including topics such as
meteorology, robotics in nursing, and forensic art. The keynote and closing
speakers focused on encouraging young women to pursue their interests in the
sciences.
