Truman
High School held its Farewell Assembly for the Class of 2016 on June 8 in the
school gymnasium. A packed crowd enjoyed the two-hour program, which including
many scholarships being handed out to graduating seniors.
It
was capped by the usual "selfie" from the most emotional person in
the building, Principal Melissa Skopczynski. This year, taking a que from the
worldwide fad of "dabbing," the principal led the graduating class in
a collective "dab" for the cameras.
The
event featured the Truman band, choir, JROTC honor guard and many officials
from the district, city and various groups, especially the Taylor Public
Schools Foundation for Educational Excellence, which handed out the majority of
the scholarship honors.
Mayor
Rick Sollars presented his third mayor's scholarship of $500 to Bianca Warner,
who is heading to Central Michigan University.
Other
award winners included Zackary Polovino (University of Michigan, $1,250),
Daniel Andrade ($500), Marques Bennett ($500), Dwight Monk ($500), Samantha
Bloss ($500), Luke DeShano ($250), Alvin Greene ($250), Katherine Polito
($250), Anthony Castro-Avelar ($500), Karina Kokay ($500), Eric Hipshire ($500)
and Alicia Duncan ($500).
All-Around
Achievement and Service Awards went to DeShano and Warner. The top music award
went to Rachel Trombetta.

The
Principal's Award went to Herrera and Monk.
Several
videos were played during the event, including a memorial to the late Ian
Taylor, who would have graduated this year but was killed in an accident.
Both
of the Class of 2016 from Truman and Kennedy graduated at the Taylor Sportsplex
this week.
