The
newly renovated Taylor Recreation Center, 22805 Goddard Road near Pardee, is
expanding regular weekly hours and adding programs.
Due
to membership demand and beginning December 1, morning hours will be expanded
to the hours of 6 a.m. until noon Mondays through Fridays. Previously, the
center was only open until 10 a.m. Mondays through Fridays, but members asked
for expanded hours and the staff and City administration reacted to those needs.
The evening hours will remain 5 to 9 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.
Due
to extremely low traffic, Saturdays hours will now be from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m.,
also beginning December 1. Previously, the TRC was open until 9 p.m. on
Saturday.
The
City and staff will continue to evaluate the schedule at the center. Mayor Rick
Sollars is heavily considering opening the center on Sunday, beginning in
January, depending on the feedback the City receives from members and would-be
members. The City of Taylor wants to tailor the facility's use to what
residents are seeking and ALWAYS welcome feedback. If you have a comment or
opinion on the facility, its schedule or its programs, let us know by calling
(734) 374-8900 or just stopping off at the TRC front desk and discussing the
issue with our staff members.
On
the program front, the TRC is now offering the following:
- Zumba and step aerobics
- Yellow Tigers Karate
- Cardio cross training and kickboxing
- Team Overlooked Basketball
- Animation Classes
- Motor-Vation (fitness for special needs students)
Likewise,
personal massage by Massage by Nancy N Co. is offered, as is racquetball,
walleyball and golf. The basketball court is available for rentals and is ideal
for both basketball or off-season baseball/softball training (and includes
batting cages and pitching machine). Taylor Dance remains on the west side of
the building and the popular program is always looking for new members.
Special
events are being added each day. On the schedule are a Mom-2-Mom Sale, blood
drive, free women's self-defense courses and raffles. Just check with the front
desk for more information. Next week's raffle contest (for members only) is for
an autographed football signed by Detroit Lions' Joique Bell. Previous raffles
included free kickboxing sessions and free personal massages. And there is much
more to come!
The
free women's self-defense classes are being offered by Yellow Tigers Karate.
They will begin in December and are limited to the first 45 to sign up.
Team
Overlooked will hold its first basketball clinic on Saturday, November 22. More
clinics are planned in January. The program focuses on the following:
- Ages 13 & under
- Maximum of 30 players per clinic
- Session 1 is planned between 3-4:30 p.m. After a 30-minute break, Session 2 will be held from 5-6:30.
- Cost is $45 and includes both sessions
Instructor
Darryl Hudson played professional international basketball for 10
year after starring at Howard University in Washington, D.C. He finished his
four-year career as one of Bisons' top all-time players with over 1,000 points
and 500 rebounds, and was the team captain during his junior and senior
seasons. He graduated with a degree in physical therapy.
