WEST MIDDLE SCHOOL chorus has big week, and looks for more

It was a big week for the West Middle School Chorus!  On May 2, the 129 singers in the Cadet Choir, Men in Black, and Cardinal Singers all performed at Holt High School for State Choir Festival.  

They each sang 3 songs for a group of music professors from U-M, EMU and MSU, and received great feedback for their hard work. After performing, the choirs got a taste of college life, eating dinner on the Michigan State University campus. 

On May 5, eighth graders of the Men in Black and Cardinal Singers performed the Star Spangled Banner at the Toledo MudHens baseball game.  They sounded great, and enjoyed a winning game by the Hens. 

Students in the West Chorus are now preparing for their spring concert, to be held at Wayne County Community College Downriver on May 28. 

WEST MIDDLE SCHOOL seventh graders take a different view

West Middle School’s classes from Mrs. Proudlock‘s and Mrs. Schulte’s seventh grade, with the assistance of Mrs. Bochenek, had the opportunity to view various slides under a microscope.

The goal of this activity was to compare how the substances looked with the naked eye versus how they looked under magnification. A second goal for the students was to be able to accurately draw the various substances as they viewed the substances through a microscope. Some of the slides were of a woody stem, sugar crystals, paper, human hair, a flower bud and onion skin. 

     

The students found this lab to be very engaging. They were surprised by the comparison between magnification and non-magnification. These hands-on activities make science relevant and exciting. West is very fortunate to have ample supplies and a supportive administration that allows many hands on activities to take place in our classrooms. 

WEST MIDDLE SCHOOL five some has a historical day!

May 9, 2019, will go down in history as one of the most memorable days for five wonderful young ladies from West Middle School.

They attended Stem Savvy 2019, held at Wayne County Community College. This stem conference was sponsored by the AAUW – Wyandotte – Downriver Branch.

The students in attendance were Estrella Chacon, Destiny Sayles, Abigail Owusu, Gabriella Henderson and Kassi Glenn. 

     

The students had an opportunity to hear two speakers who encouraged them to DREAM BIG. The students also attended three workshops. The workshops focused on Biohazard Containment, Bee Biology, Art Meets Mindfulness, Chemistry, Ergonomic Engineering and Gene Sequencing. The students were also treated to a delicious lunch. 

We sincerely thank the AAUW members for their commitment, time and effort that went into motivating and inspiring our girls to reach their fullest potential, even if the journey does not always take a straight path.

WEST MIDDLE SCHOOL students a big hit with paper mache

Mrs. Meier’s eighth grade art classes at West Middle School have outdone themselves.

For many it is their second time creating papier-mâché works of art. Many have upped their game. Moving away from typical masks, several students have created animals or animated characters in this medium.

Even those students who chose to make a papier-mâché masks added wonderful details with paint. Kudos to Mrs. Meier for providing a creative environment and to West Middle School’s eighth-grade art students for taking their papier-mâché projects to the next level.

HOOVER MIDDLE SCHOOL Color Run a success

Hoover Middle School had its first color run on May 3 to raise money for the American Cancer Society. ACS staff member Danielle Kaminski came out to join us and accept the $1,570 raised so far.  The Hoover Hawks Band also led the Relay for Life at Heritage Park on May 11.
