West
Middle School’s classes from Mrs. Proudlock‘s and Mrs. Schulte’s seventh grade,
with the assistance of Mrs. Bochenek, had the opportunity to view various
slides under a microscope.
The
goal of this activity was to compare how the substances looked with the naked
eye versus how they looked under magnification. A second goal for the students
was to be able to accurately draw the various substances as they viewed the
substances through a microscope. Some of the slides were of a woody stem, sugar
crystals, paper, human hair, a flower bud and onion skin.
The
students found this lab to be very engaging. They were surprised by the
comparison between magnification and non-magnification. These hands-on
activities make science relevant and exciting. West is very fortunate to have
ample supplies and a supportive administration that allows many hands on
activities to take place in our classrooms.
