EUREKA HEIGHTS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL classes get a visit from the mayor

 Mayor Rick Sollars visited Eureka Heights Elementary School this last week. He spoke with two third-grade classes in Mrs. Rybski's room. The pupils have been studying government, and were interested in Mayor Sollars' job, his challenges, and his background. Great young students. - very engaging. The mayor looks forward to seeing you when you visit City Hall in the near future.

BLAIR MOODY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL pupils learn about castles

Third-grade students from Mrs. Tevepaugh's classroom at Blair Moody Elementary School "visited" several castles, as a kickoff to their project-based unit on castles.

The students were transported to castles around the world with the help of Virtual Reality goggles. Once there, they were able to "explore" the outside of the castle as well as take a peek inside.

Students were asked to compare and contrast eight different castles and record their observations.

As the unit progresses, the third graders will also learn about nonfiction text features, new vocabulary, idioms, fairytales, engineering, forces, geography, and how Michigan forts connect to castles. Before the unit ends, they are going to be digital pen pals with a third grade classroom in a castle community in England.

WEST MIDDLE SCHOOL visited by acclaimed author

On January 10, West Middle School seventh-grade ELA students were treated to a very special guest speaker. Ms. Carol Trembath, a Michigan author, spoke with our students about the process she went through to write and publish her two books, Water Walker and Stepping Stones.  

Both books are based on the Native American experience and their desire to protect our environment, especially our Great Lakes. I highly recommend her books.
