MCDOWELL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL: Look out below!

Mrs. VanDerworp at McDowell Elementary School had this to say about a recent discovery in her class:

“My third graders were engineers. Their task? They had to work with a team to design and create a ‘helmet’ for an egg.  The egg had to withstand a drop from the ceiling of our hallway without becoming damaged in any way. Some teams were successful, and others had to go back to the drawing board.”

Here are some McDowell Elementary School pictures from Mrs. VanDerworp's field trip to the Museum of Natural History in Ann Arbor.  

These third graders learned that dinosaurs have something in common with birds.  Birds and some dinosaurs swallowed stones to grind up their food to make it easy to digest.

MCDOWELL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL features Capt. Sorefeet

Ms. Hutchison (aka Captain Sorefeet) at McDowell Elementary School had some very fun adventures for her group as they looked for booty and learned all about pirates. You should have heard them practicing to talk like a pirate!

HOLLAND ELEMENTARY SCHOOL students accept special delivery

Mrs. Nichols third and forth grade Holland Elementary School students took delivery of some very special dirt recently, shipped all the way from Arkansas. The students mined through the earth to discover crystals that they were able to clean and keep!

HOOVER MIDDLE SCHOOL girls attend STEM workshop

In May five of Hoover Middle School’s seventh-grade girls had an opportunity to attend the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) workshop hosted by the American Association of University of Women (AAUW).

The purpose of this program is to provide middle school girls with interactive workshops featuring dynamic women scientists, engineers and health care specialists, and showcase opportunities for women in scientific careers. 

The five students, along with Ms. Hicks, had a fantastic day learning about careers in these fields. The students were able to choose three workshops that they were interested attending for the day including topics such as meteorology, robotics in nursing, and forensic art. The keynote and closing speakers focused on encouraging young women to pursue their interests in the sciences. 

MCDOWELL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL students learn about habitats

McDowell Elementary School kindergartens learned about habitats on their trip to the University of Michigan-Dearborn.  The children studied a pond and forest habitat.  What a fun way to learn! 

RANDALL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL council runs store

Once a month Randall Elementary School's student council runs a school store in the library before school. Students may purchase school supplies such as erasers, pencils, folders, or sharpeners from 25 cents to $1.  A big “thank you” to the council for all they do for the Mustangs!
