Second-graders
from Taylor Parks Elementary School toured Taylor City Hall, the Veterans
Museum, Police Department and the Midtown Fire Station Friday, May 16. They had
some special treats -- both literally and figuratively.
They
listened to Mayor Rick Sollars, City Clerk Cindy Bower and City Treasurer
Edward Bourassa in the City Council Chambers to being the two-hour session.
Sollars, a graduate of Taylor Parks himself, explained his position as mayor
and took some interesting questions. Bower did much of the same, although she
held a mock election and handed out "I Voted" stickers to all of the
children. Bourassa, ever the clever one, handed out candy coins and coupons to
McDonald's.
In
a special treat, the children witnessed the swearing in of Taylor's two newest
police officers by Clerk Bower.
Across
the City Hall lobby, the students received special lapel pins from Taylor
Veterans Committee volunteer David LeClaire. Pat Kucharek, another veterans'
volunteer, gave the children a 20-minute speech about the Veterans Museum.
Police
Chief Mary Sclabassi took the time to personally handle the tour of the Police
Department, where the children learned about the inner-workings of the force
and were able to visit the squad room and dispatch center before getting to
slide into the back seat of a police car.
The
tour finished at the Fire Department, where several different firefighters
broke the large group into thirds and showed them the entire station, including
living quarters, command center, kitchen and the vehicle bay, where the
students were able to view fire department gear and the fire trucks.
