WEST MIDDLE SCHOOL holds TENS Symposium

Hip hip hooray! The day has finally come. West Middle School held its TENS Symposium. Mrs. Schulte’s seventh grade students displayed their science boards on May 30.

The boards reflected the results of their research project that was conducted at Indian Springs Metropark.  At the TENS Symposium students shared their research project with one another. Each group explained their question, procedures, materials and conclusion. Data was displayed in graph form.

After they were treated to a pizza lunch, provided by Indian Springs Metropark and sponsored by the 3M Corporation, groups then relayed their project information to their peers.  Other science students were invited to attend the TENS Symposium. The responses from the invited guests were very positive.  Guests were impressed by the neatness of the boards and the wealth of information provided by Mrs. Schulte’s students.

But most importantly, Mrs. Schulte’s seventh grade science students are very proud of their work. Many students look forward to returning to a Metropark setting for further investigation or just to enjoy the beauty of a park setting. The students enjoyed talking to their peers about what they learned.

This experience had many benefits. Students now have real world experience in conducting an experiment using the scientific method. They gained confidence in their public speaking abilities.  Inferences they made by drawing conclusions from the data they had collected allowed them to improve their problem solving strategies and employ higher order thinking skills.

Finally, West Middle School, especially Mrs. Schulte and Mrs. Bochenek, wish to thank the naturalists from the Indian Springs Metropark and the 3M Corporation for making this experience possible. With their funding and support, our students had a wonderful real world experience that they will remember for a lifetime.  The “seeds” that were planted because of this experience will influence future career choices for many of our students.
