WEST MIDDLE SCHOOL students get a taste of dentistry

On December 18, West Middle School seventh-grade science students were given an overview of the many and varied careers available under the dental umbrella.

Two representatives from the lab Dental Advisor, located in Ann Arbor, spoke with students, giving them a wealth of information. Ms. Mary Yakas and Ms. Nelson told our students that all their classes were important to be successfully employed by the world of dentistry.

Some of the careers in dentistry include clinical work, research, engineering, business and sales. All the careers they discussed require post high school education. Mrs. Yakas stressed that computer skills are sought after throughout this field. She also told the students that as they move forward in their education, STEM education is invaluable.

Ms. Nelson, a neuroscientist, is responsible for overseeing the microbiology lab at the Dental Advisor. Ms. Nelson focuses on the bacteria in your mouth that can cause harm to all parts of your body. She tests dental products, including gloves, masks, goggles, and hand sanitizers for effectiveness, using the scientific method. Another part of her responsibilities is to educate the proper use of these products.

The Dental Advisor representatives also relayed all the new technologies in dentistry. CAD drawing, 3D printing and scan imaging have all revolutionized your dental visit.

Dentistry is an exciting field with new products being developed all the time.  The field is constantly changing. The staff t West Middle School would love it if students were actively part of this change once they complete their college education.
