SIXTH GRADE ACADEMY'S Career Day another success

The Sixth Grade Academy held its Career Day today (Friday, May 13).

During the annual event, the morning is blocked off the school’s schedule and students are asked to pick three “career” presentations to view and report. The presenters are located in classrooms across the school, and for three different time periods, students rotate to listen to the discussions that have previously picked out.

The City of Taylor was represented by Mayor Rick Sollars, who discussed his role in the City along with giving an overview of government as a whole; Clerk Cindy Bower, who discussed her work with a heavy emphasis on elections; and Taylor Police liaison unit of Rosanna Hopper, Frank Canning Jr. and Paul O’Connor, who discussed law enforcement in the community (and brought along the SWAT gear to wow the students – which worked).

Other presentations included photography/website/graphic design; marketing and branding from the Detroit Red Wings; the Wayne State University canine unit; auto design; health care; charity work; military; aviation; major college athletic officiating; jewelry; and corrections.

“This is a great education tool,” Mayor Sollars said. “I don’t know how many of the kids want to be the mayor or hold a political office, but as the morning progressed, the students engaged more and more. I got some good questions. When you look around at all of the career offerings on display, there were some fascinating career paths.”

Probably the most famous guest today was one we missed: Former Red Wing and current special assistant to the general manager Kris Draper made a stop to say hello.
