The
business law students at Truman High School recently participated in a
simulated “Mock Trial” held at “Truman District Court.”
Holding
a mock trial in the classroom is a hands-on teaching method that allows
students to gain insight into the trial process and courtroom procedures. It
challenges students analytical and communication skills.
They
used the tools learned throughout the trimester to research and conduct the
trial. Students participated in the trial by taking on the roles of plaintiff,
defendant, attorney, witness, court reporter, judge and jury members.
They
practiced opening and closing statements, giving testimony, direct and cross
examination of witnesses and finally a jury deliberation. As a result of the
students’ hard work and dedication they gained an insight into how the legal
system deals with factual and legal disputes.
The
entire project allowed for students to gain an educational experience that they
will remember forever and exposure to a variety of careers in law along with
the fundamental law concepts such as authority and fairness, according to the
teaching staff.
