Students at Hoover Middle School were
recently shown short videos on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the origin of
the day set aside to honor him, which is meant as a day of service.
Students were then given a pledge
letter to sign and return (if they chose to do so – a copy of the letter is shown at the bottom of this blog), stating that they pledge to do at least one act of service.
As Ms. Betke went through the forms
returned, she read how Hoover students helped out neighbors and the elderly
with different things and how they shoveled snow at their churches and in their
communities.
There was a family that volunteered
at a soup kitchen. Clothes, books and blankets were donated. A few brought in
change for the school’s “Hats for Heat” program. Many created thank-you cards
and placemats for those that donate to the Red Cross. Many wrote letters to
troops. Quite a few of the students made posters that will be hanging in the
halls of Hoover.
Overall, Hoover had over 30 students,
teachers and teachers' families that gave of their time on Martin Luther King
Day to honor him and the service he did for others!
So proud of our students!!!!
