Several years ago, The Home Depot
West location on Goddard and Telegraph adopted Holland Elementary School.
For the past two years, Manager
Rodney Harris and his staff have worked with second-grade teacher Rhonda Danaj
and her classes on different projects. Golf, Parks & Recreation Executive
Director Jeff Dobek has worked with the group.
As part of a lesson plan focusing
on learning about their community, Home Depot and Danaj's pupils have spent
time working in and researching Heritage Park. Last year, they learned about
Maggie's Sweet Shop and did a detailed power point report, that was submitted
to the City Council during a regular meeting.
On Tuesday (May 17), Danaj and
this year's class returned to the City Council Chambers to turn in a report on
the gazebo area adjacent to Coan Lake.
The second-graders found that
while the gazebo looks good on the outside, it is deteriorating on the inside
and needs work like new paint, removing nests, etc.
"This is a great way for the
kids to get involved in their community," Dobek said. "Every year
since Mrs. Danaj has asked, I've met with her students and talked about
different parts of the park. The Home Depot is a tremendous partner in Taylor,
and always provides supplies and supervision.
"Last year, we looked at
Maggie's Sweet Shop and improved that area. This year, we'll focus on the
gazebo."
Danaj divided her class into five
groups for the council presentation, and each talked about area of the report.
The council asked questions of the group before accepting the report to be
received and filed.
