TEACHERS TAKE SUMMER classes on new applications

This summer Taylor School District teachers have been hard at work learning how to use the iPads in class.

Programs like iMovie, GarageBand, Keynote, and Classkick have all been highlighted in these trainings. The district is excited for students to return to school in the fall and to show us what they have learned using the iPad.

DENTISTRY FROM THE HEART offers free services September 10

Dr. Steven Shwedel will once again host a free dental care event through Dentistry From The Heart supporting Wayne County residents by providing first 130-plus adult patients free dental services on Saturday, September 10.

The team of dental professionals at Shwedel Dental will provide patients with a free filling, extraction or cleaning.  There will also be several hygienists, dental assistants and other dental professionals donating their time and resources, in order to provide free dental care to as many residents in need as possible. This event will donate thousands of dollars in free dental care and provide much needed relief to people in need in the community.   

The media is invited to join the teams of volunteers, patients, and Dr. Shwedel to spread free smiles across Wayne County through Dentistry From The Heart located at 25650 Goddard Road, Taylor. This event is for adults 18 and up. Patients are asked to arrive early as the event is first-come, first-serve.Registration will begin at 7:45 a.m. and patients will be seen through 5 p.m. that day. Patients are also encouraged dress appropriate for the weather and bring chairs, water, snacks, etc. as they will be outside waiting to be seen. 

This is the eighth annual event for Shwedel Dental with Dr. Steve Shwedel and his team of volunteers. Previous events have brought relief to over 840 people while donating over $230,000 in free dental care to the Taylor community and hundreds of other Dentistry From The Heart members. It will not be their last annual event. This sort of outreach comes complete with improved smiles, relief from suffering and a warm sense of gratitude that pervades these events. The services provided by Dentistry From The Heart not only help a patient’s teeth and overall health, it gives them a renewed reason to smile.

In 2001, Dentistry From The Heart started with Dr. Vincent Monticciolo who wanted to give back to the community and to provide aid to the growing number of Americans without dental insurance. Dentistry From The Heart is a registered non-profit organization that provides free dental work for people in need. Since its inception, Dentistry From The Heart has grown to include over 200 annual events nationwide and has provided more than 80,000 people with an estimated $10 million in free dental care services.  

ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION featured during concert series

Before school resumes, why not take in one of the weekly presentations of the summer concert series in our community.

The Taylor Conservatory & Botanical Gardens' Music & Concert in the Gardens continues its 2016 season on Wednesday, August 10, with its 10th anniversary celebration featuring "Girls Night Out."

Tickets are just $5. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. with the show from 6:30-8:30. Presented by Wayne County Community College District Downriver.

BENEFIT SCHEDULED at Taylor Chevrolet to aid Taylor Firefighters

Taylor Chevrolet is planned a “Cruise for a Cause” benefit to aid the Taylor Fire Department.

From 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, August 25, the dealership will be the host of a daylong car wash by the Taylor Firefighters, celebrity dunk tank, appearances by radio personalities Rat and Puff and Krystal Lucas (the Taylor Chevrolet girl) and much more.

This is all to benefit Taylor’s firefighters. The department will have a fire truck on hand for demonstrations, fire pump and even hamburgers, hot dogs and ice cream. 

Taylor Chevrolet is located at 18301 Telegraph Road.

Chief Stephen Portis is ready for dunk tank duty and Deputy Chief Stan “The Swimmer” Pochron is in training. Efforts to lure Mayor Rick Sollars anywhere near the dunk tank have failed thus far, but you never know what the future will hold.

“Usually, we’re the guys out raising money for other charities, but Mark Montante and Taylor Chevrolet have decided to dedicate a ‘Cruise for a Cause’ day to us, and it is greatly appreciated,” Fire Chief Portis said. “We’ve recently ordered a lot of new equipment, but when you’re a firefighter, you live on the job waiting for the next call. The station becomes your home away from home. And we’d welcome the funds raised by Taylor Chevy to buy some new furniture and things like that for the living quarters of the stations.”

All donations raised during the event will be matched by Taylor Chevrolet, and will be dedicated to the fire department.

“Mark and Taylor Chevrolet have always been great supporters of the City of Taylor,” Mayor Sollars said. “This is a great opportunity for the community to support our firefighters, and to have some fun. I hope everyone will join me in attending the event.”

The Taylor Fire Department has three stations, the main facility in the City Hall complex on Goddard; another on Ecorse near Taylor Meadows Golf Course; and a south station on Eureka east of Telegraph.

Earlier this year, the fire department was the recipient of other key donations. Gardner White Furniture (7680 Telegraph) outfitted all three stations with badly needed new bedding as part of its re-launch of its Taylor location. That celebration followed more than $500,000 in renovations to the Telegraph store. Walmart recently donated a new treadmill to the department in an effort to upgrade its workout facilities in the main station.

Adding to the fun during Taylor Chevy’s “Cruise for a Cause” will be Rat and Puff, celebrities from 98.7 AMP Radio’s Raw and Uncut programming, who will be on hand from noon until 2 p.m.

FAMILY HEALTH CENTER offers free Community Health Fair on August 10

The Western Wayne County Family Health Center, located at the Human Services Building, 26650 Eureka Road, will be hosting a "Community Health Fair" as part of National Health Center Week between noon-4 p.m. Wednesday, August 10.

Free screenings will be available for adults and children for general health and dental issues, as well as heart and diabetes. 

Plenty of resource material will be offered.

It's also going to be plenty of fun for the family, with a DJ, bouncy houses and free food.

TEEN HEALTH CENTER expert to discuss parenting skills at free workshop

Heads up parents! A guest speaker from the Taylor Teen Health Center will be on hand to present a free parenting seminar at the Taylor on Watch meeting on Thursday, August 18 at 7 p.m. at the Taylor Conservatory & Botanical Gardens. 

The event is free to the public. Stop by and learn important parenting skills along with information about Taylor on Watch, a Taylor Police initiative that works in partnership with residents of the community.

The parenting expert will be discussing parenting techniques, dealing with teenagers and taking questions. Please don't miss out on the special presentation. 

The Taylor Police Department's school resource officers will also be there and we will also be raffling off a back-to-school backpack filled with school supplies!
