HOLLAND ELEMENTARY SCHOOL: Mayor makes a visit

Mayor Rick Sollars made a stop at Holland Elementary School and visited Ms. Danaj's second-grade class on Thursday, January 29. 

The class was doing a study of the City of Taylor and had taken a tour of the community earlier in the day. As part of the project, each student made informational folders on a certain aspect of the city -- the conservatory, Heritage Park, etc. 

Tom Long of Keck Realty took the time to touch base with the mayor, who came out, discussed the project with the children and then invited them to present their work at a future City Council meeting. 

As part of today's activities, the class also took part in the Danaj International Food Festival, which included samplings from several countries including Mexico, France, China and Italy. 

There is no truth to the rumor that Mayor Sollars and Tom Long went right for the dessert tray ... Great job by all the kids. We look forward to seeing you at a future council meeting.

MCDOWELL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL: Displaying a theme

Writing, reading and research go hand and hand at McDowell Elementary School. Each month students find information and display work based on a theme. Here is some of their great work in answer to Ms. Hutchison's question, "Which animals should we chose for the zoo's arctic area?"

MCDOWELL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL: Basketball players, cheerleaders are ready to go

McDowell Elementary School has school spirit! Here are some "very enthusiastic" cheerleaders and "ready to play" basketball players. So far they are 1-0

Staff at the school invite everyone to come and see the games. Here's the schedule to catch a good game of Bitty-Ball:

• February 13th - 5:45 pm Eureka Heights
• February 20th - 7:15 pm Myers

All games will be played at Kennedy High School on Northline Road.

MCDOWELL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL: Reading buddies are a big hit!

Exciting things are happening for Ms. Park's first graders at McDowell Elementary School. They get to meet with their fourth-grade reading buddies from Mr. Hamilton's class regularly.

Needless to say, the first graders are always excited. They get to read to their buddy and listen to their buddy read to them. What a fun way to work on becoming strong readers. Even the teachers are reading buddies.

MYERS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL: It's all about penguins

Mrs. Filiccia's third graders at Myers Elementary School are currently learning all about penguins. They are reading fiction and nonfiction texts (daily read aloud: “Mr. Popper's Penguins”), researching facts and planning a field trip to the IMAX in Dearborn to see the movie “Penguins.”

MYERS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL: Students have their own 'dreams'

At Myers Elementary School, Ms. Petersen and Mrs. Hecht's Resource Room students studied Martin Luther King Jr. and wrote their own "dreams" for the world.
