WEST MIDDLE SCHOOL music program highlights annual Rotary Club gathering

It used to be called "Turn Off the Violence Day," and then it changed to "Turn Off the Violence -- Get Healthy," Now, the Rotary Club of Taylor has settled on the "Rotary Family Fund Day," which is one of the most popular events annually at the Sheridan Center Open Air Pavilion in Heritage Park.

The most recent event took place Thursday afternoon (September 27) and featured a host of entertainment, information and activities.

As has been tradition, the West Middle School music program handled the entertainment, with several choruses on hand along with the marching band. They sang and played to a huge crowd of parents, relatives and friends.

Beaumont's Healthy Taylor program featured a large number of information and activity-driven tables.

The Rotary provided the food and refreshments free, and did all the cooking and serving. Taylor Police displayed a patrol car, and the Petting Farm brought over animals.

REMEMBER: What to ask at parent-teacher conferences.

Effective parent involvement includes a range of actions from reading and talking with children and asking "What did you learn today?" to attending parent-teacher conferences and helping children and youth make good choices about what they do after school and in the summer.

Overview
Take advantage of parent-teacher conferences during the school year. Think of some questions and concerns you may have and write them down before your meeting. Keep track of your child's schoolwork to help you with your questions. You are in a position to share important information, as well as ask questions.

Remember, you can and should talk to your child's teacher throughout the year.

QUESTIONS TO ASK FOR STUDENTS IN ALL GRADES:
  • Is my child performing at grade level?
  • What are my child's strengths and weaknesses in reading, math, and science?
  • How much time should my child spend on homework?
  • Are my child's assignments completed accurately?
  • Does the school have special programs to meet my child's needs?
  • Does my child have special learning needs? Are there special classes my child should be in?
  • Do you keep a folder of my child's work? If yes, could you review it with me?
  • Does my child have close friends? How well does my child get along with the other students?
  • What can we do at home to support classroom learning?
  • What is the best way to keep in touch with you?

Additional questions for middle and high school students:
  • How can I help my child to work independently and make the best use of time?
  • How can I help my child prepare for high school?
  • What can you tell me about peer pressure and how I can help my child handle difficult situations-drugs, alcohol, and sex?
  • What courses should my child take to satisfy graduation requirements?
  • Do you have a list of courses my child should take to be ready to enter college?
  • If my child plans to attend college, how will the school help with the application process?
  • If my child plans to attend college, how will the school help my child find out about financial aid?

TAYLOR HIGH SCHOOL DECA students make new friends, show unity

You gotta love it! Newfound friends at Taylor High School, former Truman and Kennedy students, come together as new marketing classmates to raffle off blankets for our homeless food pantry.

They are DECA buddies for life. There is unity in our community Come to school store to buy raffle tickets – we’ll pull winning ticket at Homecoming (DECA will also be selling at the game, too.)

TAYLOR HIGH SCHOOL advanced marketing class attends chamber forum

Taylor City Council Chairman Alex Garza sponsored the Taylor High School advanced marketing students’ table for the Southern Wayne Chamber of Commerce Business Forum recently. Speaker Warren Evans, the Wayne County executive, was wonderful – he even chose student Sana Abedi’s question to answer. We also got to meet Mary Treder Lang who is running for secretary of state.

BLAIR MOODY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL goes to the 'dogs'

Blair Moody Elementary School's WATCH D.O.G.S. held a kick off night recently. Over 140 boys, girls, dads and other male role models came together to celebrate mentoring. Pizza was served, donated by Pizza Hut.

BLAIR MOODY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL students get a 'book break'

Blair Moody Elementary School fifth-grade teacher Mrs. Gibson recently asked family, friends and the community over social media for help getting books in the hands of her students.

She asked for people to sponsor students in her classroom. A sponsorship of $9 per child would allow each student to receive one book per month from Scholastic Book Clubs for the entire school year.

Her students received their first book for the month of September and they are enjoying them! Mrs. Gibson and her class thank everyone for their generosity!
