HOLLAND ELEMENTARY SCHOOL class holds festival word hunt

Mrs. Holstein's class at Holland Elementary School didn't go searching for leprechauns. Instead, they went on a festive word hunt, searching all over the classroom for words hidden. They had a blast. The winner who found all of the words first got a prize. The class also was busy writing stories about catching a leprechaun and made an art project of a leprechaun.

HOOVER MIDDLE SCHOOL classes research historical figures

In Mrs. Kirkland's eighth-grade social studies classes at Hoover Middle School chose historical figures to research. Students gained great perspective through their research learning of their historical figures great accomplishments, as well as their failures.  

WEST MIDDLE SCHOOL band members visit Orchestra Hall

On Monday, March 19, seven students from the West Middle School Concert Band spent the day at Orchestra Hall in Detroit representing the Taylor School District. 

The students spent the day with honor students from all around southeast Michigan performing in the Honors Middle School Band. Students worked with musicians from the Detroit Symphony Orchestra for an entire school day and then performed a concert on stage for parents and friends. 

Thanks to the generous donations from the Taylor Federation of Teachers, Taylor Foundation, and  Alpha Delta Kappa, this musical group of talented students had a wonderful musical journey.

WEST MIDDLE SCHOOL band students outstanding in Dearborn Heights

Congratulations to the West Middle School Varsity and Concert Band students for a successful performance at the District 12 MSBOA Band Competition on Friday, March 9. 

The band students traveled to Riverside Middle School in Dearborn Heights and were awarded an “Excellent” rating.  The Varsity Band received top honors in “Sight Reading.” Job well done, band!

Learn about the reasons behind addiction and the manipulations used to support drug use, the tragedies suffered by families/friends, and the journey required to reach recovery by attending a Families Against Narcotics meeting. 

Join to hear from its panel of experts, individuals in recovery and parents, as they share their stories, followed by question and answer period. 

The next FAN meeting will be held on Thursday, April 19. It will begin at 6:30 p.m. at Turning Point Clubhouse, 1605 Fort St., Lincoln Park.  

HOOVER MIDDLE SCHOOL students give cardio drumming a try

Lori Harvard at Hoover Middle School wants her students to be able to have fun at school, but there are not many activities/clubs that interest them.

She wanted to do something to fill that gap and decided to try cardio drumming with them. Harvard attends a drumming class a few times a week and recorded it to share with the kids. They enjoyed it and wanted to try it.

Harvard went through the routine with them and told them to pretend they had the equipment to do it. Next, the students got the feel of the drumsticks that Harvard uses, to get the feel of it. 

The students promised to do the activity if she got the equipment. We will do the drumming a couple times a week when time permits.

SCHOOL GROUPS welcome at fifth Heritage Park Cleanup Day

The fifth annual Heritage Park Cleanup Day is scheduled for 8 a.m. Saturday, April 14. This is an opportunity to join hundreds of park supporters and clean debris out of the City's largest park. For students, its also an opportunity to earn community credit hours.

Join in the fun. This is a rain or shine event. Dress appropriately and bring your own gloves.

Coffee, water, cookies and donuts to begin the day. Giveaways afterward.

TAYLOR PARKS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL class welcome's City Council pro team

City of Taylor City Council Pro Tem Tim Woolley made a guest appearance at Taylor Parks Elementary School for March is Reading Month. Visiting Mrs. Bergeron's fifth-grade class, Woolley read a wonderful book titled “Michael's Golden Rule.” This book, written by Michael Jordan's mother, Roslyn Jordan, tells the story of the importance of following the rules of life, just as her son Michael had to learn.

ANTI-BULLYING WALK planned for June 3 in Heritage Park

An “Anti-Bullying Walk” is planned for Sunday, June 3, at Heritage Park. This walk is to raise awareness. Everyone is welcomed. Registration for the walk starts at noon.

Food, face painting, games, balloons, surprise guests, anti-bullying PBIS guest speaker are all planned. The fun starts at 11 a.m. with the registration for the walk at noon and the actual walk at 1 p.m.

Basket raffles tickets and walk T-shirts will be available to purchase, but everything else is free.

LAW ENFORCEMENT GROUPS call for more security funding for schools

Law enforcement and education groups are calling on Michigan lawmakers to provide $120 million to fund school resource officers, mental health professionals and building safety inspections in the wake of violent school shootings in Florida and Maryland.
