KENNEDY HIGH SCHOOL: Seniors fundraise for bullet proof vest for police dog

Tuesday, January 27, is fundraising night at the Texas Roadhouse in Taylor.

Kennedy High School seniors Devon White and Cody Serafin are working together to raise the proper funds to provide Atlas, a K9 officer at the Taylor Police Department, with a bulletproof vest. All funds raised during this special event will go directly to a purchase of one of these life-saving commodities.

Support the cause by eating at the Texas Roadhouse from 3:45 to 10 p.m. on January 27. Ten percent will go directly to the fundraising efforts.

Special coupons for this fund-raising effort can be picked up at the greeter's front desk inside the main (north) entrance of City Hall.

Call ahead for seating: (734) 374-5500 and make sure that they know you are part of the fundraiser.

There will also be a fundraising event at Bob Evans, 20465 Eureka, on Tuesday, February 3. The restaurant will donate 15 percent of its sales on dine-in or carryout between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. that day. Just present your coupon at the time of checkout.

If you cannot be part of one of the fundraising events, general donations to the Bulletproof K9 program can be made at any Charter One Bank location. Copies of the deposit ticket form are also available at the City Hall greeter's counter.

MCDOWELL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL: Special family moves away

It's always sad to say goodbye, and a very special family moves away this week and returns to California.

Here is Salma and her classmates from Mrs. Lavender's first grade getting one last picture together. This McDowell Elementary School family will be very missed. Best wishes go with them!

MCDOWELL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL: Kindergarteners on the horizon

McDowell Elementary School is getting ready for kindergarten!

Recently it hosted several families that will have kindergarten students next fall. Principal Borg introduced our two kindergarten teachers, Ms. Bochenek and Mrs. Doll, and they went over very important information for the parents. Also, the school nurse and reading specialist added good things to remember to start the year.

McDowell's very important reminder to all of our families is always read, read, read every day!

SIXTH GRADE ACADEMY: Band visits Hoover

The band students at the Sixth Grade Academy went to Hoover Middle School on December 12, 2014 to attend the Hoover Winter Concert presented by the band and chorus students. The sixth-grade students enjoyed seeing the instruments that we don't have at the Sixth Grade Academy. They especially liked the bassoon, bass clarinet and the baritone saxophone. The band students are looking forward to attending the Hoover Spring Concert in March.

There are about 140 Hoover Band students. The Concert Band is the top band made up of all eighth-grade students. There are also two Varsity Bands made up of all seventh-grade students and an Intro Band made up of both seventh and eighth grade students. The Jazz Band is made up of select eighth-grade band students. All bands rehearse daily and the two Varsity Bands and Intro Bands combine for performances. Mr. Bergler is in his 24th as the Band Director at Hoover Middle School

Hoover offers two choirs, the concert Choir (made up of eighth-grade girls) and the Chorallers Choir (made up of seventh and eighth grade). Our theme this year was Motown/Beatles. We are currently preparing for the district competition that will be held on Thursday, March 5 at Whitmore Lake High School. The choir is directed by Mrs. Joanne Farmer.

RANDALL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL: Learning about penguins

Mrs. Holstein’s kindergarten class at Randall Elementary School learned a lot about penguins recently.

First they read some fiction and non-fiction books about penguins. Then the students crafted their own penguin out of recycled water bottles. They also made a graph to see if they were taller than an Emperor penguin and had fun while learning!
